How to Create a QR Code for Google Reviews

A QR code that opens Google's five-star review box in one tap turns satisfied diners and shoppers into public proof. Here is how to build, place, and word it without breaking Google's rules.

Most customers who have a great experience in your restaurant, pub, salon or high street shop will never leave a review if you ask them to “search for us on Google”. The friction is too high: they open an app, search your trading name, find three businesses with similar names, tap into the profile, scroll past opening hours, and finally find the review button. By then, half of them give up.

A dedicated review QR code skips every single step. Scanned with a standard phone camera, it immediately launches the browser or Google Maps app and displays the rating dialogue with five empty stars and a text field. Creating one costs nothing and takes under two minutes.

Google provides a direct review URL inside your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). You do not need third-party review software or an agency subscription.

  1. Sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile.
  2. Search for your business name on Google search or open Google Maps.
  3. In the merchant dashboard menu, click on Ask for reviews (or “Promote” > “Ask for reviews”).
  4. Copy the shortened URL provided. It typically looks like https://g.page/r/CdfgT5x.../review or https://business.google.com/review/....

Crucial step: test the link incognito. Open an incognito browser window on your phone and paste the link. If you are not signed into a Google account, Google will prompt for a login; if you are signed in, the review box with five empty stars will pop up immediately. If the link lands on your general knowledge panel or photos tab instead, you copied the share link for the business rather than the review prompt.

Best print placements for UK venues

Timing and physical context determine review conversion. Asking for a review before someone has experienced your service is irritating; asking three days later by email is often ignored. Put the code where satisfaction peaks.

On till receipts, ensure thermal printer resolution is sharp. Thermal paper prints at lower DPI, and heat fade can blur fine modules over a few hours. If your receipts have narrow print widths, keep the URL string as short as possible so the QR code stays coarse.

Do not rely on the till receipt alone

Most customers scrunch up till receipts and bin them outside the shop. A neat freestanding acrylic sign on the counter or a printed bill slip kept on the table yields far higher scan rates than thermal till paper.

Wording that actually gets scans

A bare QR code with the word “Scan Me” gives customers zero motivation. They wonder: does this open a menu, an Instagram account, a newsletter signup, or a review form? Tell them what the code does and why their opinion matters.

  • For restaurants and cafés: “Enjoyed your meal? A quick Google review helps our small team enormously.”
  • For barbers and salons: “Loving your new look? Scan to tell Google about your stylist.”
  • For trades and services: “Happy with our work? Help other homeowners find us by sharing your feedback.”
  • Short counter prompt: “Had a great visit? Scan to rate us on Google.”

Keep the call to action concise and honest. Avoid begging, and never promise free drinks or raffle entries in exchange for a rating.

Google policy and review gating

Google has strict guidelines regarding customer reviews under its Prohibited and Restricted Content policies. Violating them can cause Google to delete all your reviews or suspend your Business Profile entirely.

No incentivised reviews

You cannot offer discounts, free coffees, vouchers, prize draws, or loyalty points in exchange for leaving a review. Google considers any paid or rewarded review fraudulent.

No review gating

Review gating means asking “Did you have a good experience?”, and sending happy customers to Google while routing unhappy customers to a private contact form. Google explicitly forbids selective filtering.

No staff review stations

Do not set up an iPad or phone in your shop for customers to review you on site. Multiple reviews submitted from the exact same venue IP address trigger Google's automated spam filters.

The safest, most resilient approach is a clean static QR code linking straight to Google. It complies 100% with Google's policies and respects user privacy.

Common mistakes to avoid

We routinely see small businesses print hundreds of promotional cards only to realise the code fails in daily service. Avoid these common traps:

  • Using an expiring dynamic QR vendor: Many free tools wrap your Google link in a redirect that locks behind a monthly fee after 14 days. When the fee isn't paid, the QR code redirects to an error page. Use a permanent static code generated client-side.
  • Cropping the quiet zone: When placing the QR code onto a table talker design, graphic designers often crop out the white border. Without this 4-module safety margin, smartphone cameras struggle to separate the finder patterns from the background art.
  • Weak colour contrast: Gold foil on white card or pastel pink on grey looks elegant in a branding PDF, but camera sensors cannot distinguish the data dots under warm restaurant lighting. Stick to solid dark ink on a clean white background.

Pre-print checklist

  • The Google review link was copied from Business Profile > Ask for reviews.
  • The link was tested in an incognito mobile browser to verify the review window opens directly.
  • The QR code was exported as vector SVG for professional print or 300+ DPI PNG.
  • Contrast is high: dark foreground on crisp white background.
  • Quiet zone margin is intact on all four sides.
  • Print size is at least 25 mm wide for hand-held items or 35 mm for counters.
  • The printed sample has been scanned and verified on both iOS and Android devices.

Questions before you print

Can I offer a 10% discount for leaving a Google review?

No. Google explicitly bans incentivised reviews under its Business Profile terms. Offering discounts, gifts, or competition entries in exchange for reviews risks having your profile suspended and existing reviews deleted.

What is the shortest Google review link format?

Google Business Profile provides a short link formatted as https://g.page/r/[BusinessID]/review. This shortened link keeps the QR code pattern relatively coarse and easy to scan at small print sizes.

Can non-Google users leave a review through the QR code?

A customer needs a Google account (such as Gmail or YouTube) to publish a review on Google. If they are not logged in, the link prompts them to sign in first. Over 80% of UK mobile users are already signed in on their device.

Will a static QR code ever expire?

No. A static QR code encodes the destination URL directly into its matrix. As long as your Google Business Profile remains active, the printed QR code will work indefinitely with zero ongoing fees.

Should I put my logo in the centre of the review QR code?

You can, but keep it small. If you include the Google 'G' logo, set error correction to level H (30%) so the code remains readable even with the center covered. However, plain codes without logos scan faster in dim restaurant lighting.
