The 20 mm / 25 mm rule
Never print a QR code smaller than 20 mm × 20 mm on a business card for a URL, or 25 mm for a vCard. At smaller sizes, phone lenses cannot focus closely enough to resolve individual modules.
Protect the 4-module quiet zone
Maintain an uninterrupted solid white margin of at least 2–3 mm around the entire code. If artwork, text, or the card's edge intrudes into this border, the camera will fail to identify the code.
Choose matte finishes over glossy
Glossy plastic laminates and shiny foil stamping create severe specular glare under indoor lighting. Specify silk, soft-touch, or uncoated stock so cameras can read the code from any angle.
vCard vs Website link on business cards
Choose the format that fits your networking workflow.
Direct vCard Contact File
Pros: Directly pops up "Add to Contacts" on the phone with zero clicks. Works completely offline without internet or cellular connectivity.
Cons: Cannot be changed after printing. Requires a slightly larger physical print size (25–30 mm) due to data density.
Short Website / Digital Profile Link
Pros: Very compact code that prints crisp at 20 mm. Allows you to link to a dynamic landing page with calendar booking, video, and social links that you can edit anytime.
Cons: Requires the recipient's phone to have an active data/Wi-Fi connection to load.
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about printing QR codes on business cards.
What is the best size for a QR code on a business card?
The absolute minimum size is 20 mm × 20 mm for a short URL, and 25 mm to 30 mm for a vCard contact code. Anything smaller causes the individual dots (modules) to shrink below 0.35 mm, making standard phone camera macro lenses fail to focus.
Should I use a vCard QR code or a website link on my business card?
A vCard saves your contact info directly into the phone's address book without requiring internet access. A website URL allows you to direct contacts to a rich mobile landing page (such as your portfolio or LinkedIn) which you can update anytime.
Can I print a QR code with metallic gold or spot UV foil?
Avoid placing metallic foil directly on the QR code pattern. Foil reflects light like a mirror, blinding the smartphone camera sensor. Print your QR code in high-contrast matte ink (e.g. black ink on white or off-white card stock).
Do I need to leave a margin around the QR code on the card?
Yes. A quiet zone margin of at least 4 modules (around 2–3 mm of solid background) must surround all four sides of the QR code so the camera can distinguish the code from adjacent text or the card's edge.
