Stored in browserHow to create an effective vCard QR code
Keep your digital business card scannable, compact, and universally compatible.
Enter core contact fields
Stick to essential fields: Full Name, Direct Phone Number, Work Email, Company, and Website URL. Avoid inserting addresses, bios, or photos into the QR code matrix.
Keep module density manageable
Every letter adds modules (dots) to the QR grid. For business cards, keep error correction at M (15%) unless using a logo, ensuring the dots stay large enough for phone cameras to focus on.
Export SVG for 300 DPI print
Download vector SVG for your commercial print supplier. Print at a minimum size of 25 mm × 25 mm on your business card, leaving a minimum 4-module quiet zone margin around the edges.
What to include vs what to omit
Why less data produces a significantly more reliable QR code.
Recommended to Include
Full Name: The primary contact identifier.
Mobile/Work Phone: Formatted with international dialling code (e.g. +44).
Work Email: Direct address for professional correspondence.
Organization / Job Title: Context for how you met.
Website URL: Links to your portfolio, booking page, or digital profile.
What to Omit
Profile Photos (Base64): Can inflate QR size by 400%, creating an unreadable microscopic grid.
Long Street Addresses: Bloats character counts unnecessarily.
Multiple Social Media Handles: Put these on the website page you link to instead.
Extensive Notes or Bios: Keep the contact card clean and functional.
Frequently asked questions
Answers to questions about vCard standards, printing sizes, and device support.
What happens when someone scans a vCard QR code?
When scanned with an iPhone or Android camera, the device immediately recognizes the vCard 3.0 contact payload and displays an 'Add to Contacts' or 'Create New Contact' button. Tapping it opens the native phonebook with your name, phone number, email, company, and website pre-filled.
Are my personal contact details stored on your server?
No. The vCard is created entirely inside your browser using client-side JavaScript. None of your names, phone numbers, or email addresses are ever sent to our servers or stored in any database.
Why shouldn't I embed a photo or portrait in a vCard QR code?
A photo converted to Base64 text adds several thousand characters to the QR code. This forces the QR code to use Version 20+ with microscopic modules (pixels) that cannot be scanned reliably by smartphone cameras when printed on a 85 × 55 mm business card. Stick to essential text fields.
What is the minimum recommended print size for a vCard QR code?
Because a vCard contains more characters than a simple website URL, the QR code has a denser grid. Print vCard QR codes at a minimum of 25 mm × 25 mm (ideally 30 mm) on business cards, with a clean quiet zone around the edges.
Do vCard QR codes expire?
No. QRFree produces static vCard codes where the text is permanently encoded in the matrix. They work indefinitely without subscriptions or renewal fees.
